Valentine’s Day… sometimes I feel like it’s a commercial creation designed to sucker boyfriends and girlfriends and husbands and wives into buying a box of chocolates or roses or some other trinket so as not to be guilty of the unforgettable sin of forgetting Valentine’s Day. Truth be told, my husband and I pretty much ignore it as a holiday between the two of us. We much prefer to make up our own moments to celebrate our marriage when the mood strikes (we also have a weekly tradition I should tell you about sometime!). But when it comes to family celebrations, I think Valentine’s Day is a great opportunity to show kids what it means to celebrate love as a family in a way that doesn’t revolve around something you can buy. I also believe strongly in simple, nearly free, gestures that can make memories for kids (dying the milk pink, for example).
I don’t see any need to spend hours crafting the perfect decoration or clever Valentine, but why not do one of these very simple ideas?
